Iowa's rules for working on an existing system

Iowa Administrative Code 641—Chapter 44 requires a state credential for radon mitigation work performed for hire, and as of July 1, 2026 Iowa's updated mitigation rules govern how systems are installed and modified. Practically, that means a repair that changes the system — new fan size, rerouted pipe, added suction point — is done under the same standards as a new installation, by a credentialed professional, and finished with a retest.

Repair or replace the whole system?

A failed fan on an otherwise sound system may be handled as a component repair when the replacement does not change system function or layout. A system that never brought levels down, was installed before current standards, or no longer matches the home after a renovation may need modification instead. That judgment call belongs to the credentialed professional on-site — which is why the request starts with what you observed, not with a preselected fix. Equal fluid levels mean the manometer is not showing a pressure difference. The manometer is an operating indicator; it does not measure the indoor radon level. Request an evaluation and retest after the system is restored or modified.

How long do radon fans last?

EPA says radon fans may last five years or more and manufacturer warranties tend not to exceed five years. A fan that is silent, unusually loud, grinding, or vibrating should be evaluated. The manometer indicates whether the system is creating a pressure difference, but only a radon test measures the indoor radon level.

Can I just replace the fan myself?

Iowa law requires people who perform radon mitigation system work for hire to hold a state mitigation credential, and a like-for-like swap is not always correct — fan sizing depends on the suction field the original design established. A failed fan is also a chance to have the whole system checked.

Do I need to retest after a repair?
