What does your radon test result mean?
A radon result is measured in picocuries per liter, written pCi/L. The EPA recommends fixing a home when a confirmed result is 4.0 pCi/L or higher and considering mitigation between 2 and 4. Linn County Public Health publishes more detailed follow-up guidance for each range, and Iowa HHS says mitigation decisions should not be based on a single test result.

Why one test is a snapshot, not a verdict
Radon levels can change from day to day and season to season. The EPA bases its 4.0 pCi/L recommendation on one long-term test or the average of two short-term tests, and EPA short-term tests run for at least 48 hours.
There is no known risk-free radon level. The average outdoor level is about 0.4 pCi/L, and the EPA says most homes can be reduced to 2 pCi/L or below with current methods.

No. Iowa HHS says radon has no immediate symptoms; the health risk comes from long-term exposure that can damage lung tissue and lead to lung cancer. Treat it as a long-term exposure problem: confirm the result and plan the next step.
Iowa's radon numbers are unusually high.
- Iowa is designated entirely EPA Zone 1. That means the state has the highest predicted radon potential category, but the map does not predict the level in one house.
- The Iowa Radon Survey indicated that 71.6% of Iowa homes were above 4.0 pCi/L, which Iowa HHS describes as the largest percentage among states. That is a survey finding, not a substitute for testing your property.
- The EPA estimates about 21,000 radon-related lung cancer deaths each year nationwide.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. Pressure inside a house can be lower than pressure in the surrounding soil, drawing soil gas through foundation openings.
Linn County lists common entry routes that include construction joints, gaps around service pipes, wall cavities and cracks, gaps in suspended floors, sump systems, and cracks in solid floors.
One local note worth acting on: Linn County Public Health identifies a footing drain connected to a basement sump pit as a possible radon pathway and recommends a sealed sump lid. If you have an open sump pit, mention it when you call — it can affect the provider's evaluation and system design.

How can you tell whether a passive system is already there?
Iowa's rules define a passive radon system as a system with no in-line fan that relies on upward airflow in a vertical vent pipe routed through conditioned space from the suction pit to 12 inches above the roof.
In the basement, you may see a labeled PVC pipe coming out of the slab and continuing upward through the house. Finding a pipe does not prove that the route is complete, correctly configured, or usable for activation. Tell the provider what you see and send photos if requested.

That last item is one reason this is not a weekend project. The EPA warns that an improperly designed or installed system can increase radon or create other hazards. A qualified provider evaluates the slab, airflow, exhaust route, electrical work, and combustion safety before proposing the design.

How long does the work take, and can it be completed before closing?
The provider must confirm installation timing after reviewing the house, design, access, permits, and current schedule. No universal one-day promise belongs here.
The verification window is clearer. Iowa requires the post-installation test to start no sooner than one day after completion and within 30 days. The EPA recommends a short-term post-test lasting two to seven days under closed-house conditions, with the house closed for 12 hours before the test starts.
Iowa also lists failure to complete an installation within 30 days of the start date or contracted start date as grounds for enforcement against a credentialed specialist. That is not a promise that a provider will start within any particular number of days. Tell the provider your actual closing or renovation date and get the proposed schedule in writing.
Does Cedar Rapids require a permit for radon mitigation?
Cedar Rapids requires permits and inspections when the final building or trade work falls within the city's permit rules. The city's published pages do not identify one universal radon-system permit, so the provider must confirm the exact permits and inspections for the proposed design with Building Services before work begins.
What the city does confirm:
- Building permits are generally required to erect, alter, enlarge, or demolish a structure and for repairs beyond minor normal maintenance.
- Electrical, mechanical, and plumbing trades are permitted separately when applicable, and the contractor performing each trade secures its own permit.
- Cedar Rapids requires contractors to be licensed to obtain a permit and perform work in the city.
- Work started without a required permit can trigger a doubled fee with a $250 minimum, plus a possible $100-per-hour investigation fee.
- Permits expire 12 months after issue, and work must begin within 180 days.
- Permit holders must arrange inspections before covered work is concealed, and final inspections are required on permits.
What the city does not confirm on its published Building Services pages: that every mitigation project always needs the same permit, that no permit is needed, or that one fixed radon permit fee applies. The answer depends on the final scope.

Iowa gives the job a measurable requirement: the installed system must reduce the treated area or level below 4 pCi/L, and the standard path includes a post-installation test that starts no sooner than one day after completion and within 30 days. The EPA recommends a two- to seven-day post-test under closed-house conditions and suggests an independent follow-up measurement.
The EPA's consumer checklist says to confirm these points before treating the job as complete. Iowa's adopted ANSI/AARST standard and applicable local codes control the final design.
- The system is clearly labeled so it is not disabled accidentally.
- The exhaust terminates above the roof surface and at least 10 feet above the ground, and at least 10 feet from a window, door, or other opening unless it terminates at least 2 feet above the opening.
- The fan is not located in or below a livable area. Common locations described by the EPA include an attic, garage, or exterior location when the equipment is rated for outdoor use.
- Electrical connections comply with local code, and exterior equipment is rated for outdoor use.
- A warning device — such as a pressure indicator, alarm, or light — is installed where it can be seen or heard, and the provider demonstrates how to read it.
- You receive written operation and maintenance information and copies of applicable warranties. Iowa requires the specialist's OM&M package to include the Iowa Radon Program phone number.
Then, living with it:
- Check the warning device regularly. If it changes from the provider's documented normal reading or signals a fault, call for an evaluation.
- Keep an active fan running continuously. Turning it off stops the active soil-suction system from operating as designed.
- Retest at least every two years, and again after finishing a basement or making a major structural change.
- Plan for future fan service. The EPA says fans may last five years or more, while manufacturer warranties tend not to exceed five years.
